Mt Kilimanjaro trek via Marangu route.

Marangu Route is the oldest and most popular in Kilimanjaro, it is also the fastest and the easiest, the only route with hut accommodation with over 200 bunk beds at Mandara, Kibo, and Horombo huts, Marangu route can be completed in 5days however it is recommended that climbers take an extra day to acclimatize at Horombo hut.

Marangu gate –Mandara hut
- Distance 8km
- Time 4-6 hours
- Zone rainforest
- Elevation (1,870-2,700meters)
After breakfast, we take one hour drive from Moshi to Marangu gate on the southeast of Kilimanjaro, after registering with the Kilimanjaro national park authorities we start our journey to Mandara.
Mandara hut - Horombo hut
- Distance 12km
- Time 6-8 hours
- Zone Rainforest/low Alpine zone
- Elevation 2700, 3720 meters
After an early breakfast, we start our trek through the rain forest, around the base of the Maudi crater, and transition into the alpine moorland zone, full view of Kibo is seen here you will also see giant lobelias which are scattered throughout the la landscape. Dinner and overnight at Horombo hut.
Acclimatization day at Horombo hut.
Most tour operators take hikers towards Mawenzi a 3-hour hike up and 1:30 hours back. We highly recommend it.
Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut
- Distance 10km
- Time 5-7 hours
- Zone low alpine zone /High alpine zone
- Elevation 3,720-4700 meters
We depart from Horombo hut and ascent to Kibo hut taking the lower left-hand route as it is easier and nearly an hour shorter compared to the upper route, you will find water at 4130 meters make sure to fill up your water reserves as you will not find another watering point until you get back to Horombo hut. Dinner and overnight at Kibo hut.
Kibo hut – Uhuru Park & Horombo hut
- Distance 5.5 km ascent 15km descent
- Time 6-8 hours to the summit and 5-8 hours to Horombo hut
- Zone Glacial zone, low and high alpine zone
- Elevation 4700, 5895 and 3720 meters
After a hot cup of tea and snacks begin your summit ascent, the route follows a rocky path to the first checkpoint, Hans Meyer cave at 5,150 meters, then continue to zigzag for 2-3 hours until you get to Gilman’s point (5,681 meters) on Kibo’s crater rim. Take some time to rest and get ready for the final 200-meter ascent.
You will not be able to stay too long at Uhuru peak enjoy the moment and then begin your descent back to Kibo Hut then to Horombo Hut this will be one of the longest days.
Dinner and overnight at Horombo.
Horombo hut - Marangu gate
- Distance 20km
- Time 6-8 hours
- Zone low alpine and rainforest
- Elevation 3720, 1870 meters
After breakfast start the journey to Marangu gate at this stage you will be exhausted, and then be presented with a certificate at Marangu gate.
You will then be driven to the hotel to get enough rest.
